Anna Jekel

Field Resident, June 16 - August 16, 2023

ANNA’S PROJECT

I will create large scale drawings and prints, and use various materials and techniques to create works that blur the lines between drawings, prints, collage, and painting. I am interested in experimenting with non-traditional shapes of work that can be arranged in unconventional ways.

Artist Biography

Anna Jekel is an artist living in New York City. From Newton, MA, she grew up in a creative household where she was frequently drawing, crafting, taking photographs, and playing dress up. She graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in Theatre Production. After graduation Anna held various positions as a costume designer, but started painting during pandemic lockdown. She has since shifted focus entirely to painting and currently maintains a studio practice in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Her work reflects her struggle with depression and explores gender, sexuality, and love as well as human connection to the natural world.

Hyeree Ro

Hyeree Ro is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, primarily working with sculptural objects and multi-lingual fractured narrative-based performance. Her practice is informed by her experience as a child of an immigrant growing up in California as well as her subsequent returns to Korea as a teenager and then to the US as an international student. As a constant migrant passing through various immigrant statuses and encountering disparities in class and wealth, Ro interweaves her family history, places, language, body, movement, and stories into her practice.

Her objects take on forms that resist easy categorization in terms of their origin and function, yet they evoke a sense of familiarity and engagement. Ro’s sculptures often employ rudimentary methods that emphasize the elemental qualities of the materials she uses. Ro’s performances are characterized by the use of broken, jumbled, yet poetic language, reminiscent of the speech patterns of immigrants, and functional movements that engage with the objects. The interplay of fragmented words and movements depicts scenes that avoid straightforward representation or illustration. Instead, they offer a means of re-living a moment in the present, inviting viewers to bear witness.

Ro has exhibited at Leeum Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), SVA CP Project Space(New York, NY), Project Space SARUBIA(Seoul, Korea), NARS Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Korean Culture Centre (Ottawa, Canada), Ilmin Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Akiyoshidai International Art Village (Mine, Japan) amongst others. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Yale School of Art (2021) and a BFA from Korea National University of Arts (2017).
