Don Porcella

Healthy Planet

Artist Reception: Feb 17, 6-8

Jan 13 - Feb 19, 2022

Field Projects is pleased to present Healthy Planet, a solo exhibition by Don Porcella.

Whimsical, imaginative animals and organisms populate the gallery landscape providing a momentary escape from the winter streets of Chelsea. These carefully crafted creatures offer suggestive touchstones–– meeting points–– that could pull together and, possibly, unite even the most divided opinions under the umbrella of environmental stewardship.  Entirely fabricated from pipe cleaners, these sculptures originate in Porcella’s interest in folk art as a medium that can speak to a wide audience outside of traditional artist networks. In his words, Don hopes “to strengthen our resolve to protect the earth that gives us life” through presenting a mythical reflecting pool, this imaginary Healthy Planet. A star, just out of reach.

Artist Statement

"Inspired by nature, consumer culture, and science fiction, my work is highly-reflective of my upbringing; my artistic mother and father made almost everything by hand, which can be seen in my art that celebrates craft, the hand-made, and folk and outsider art. My degree in psychology draws me to the human condition as subject matter; this motivates me everyday to value my audience in hopes of bringing people closer together, and connecting them to their natural environment. Art can do amazing things; my goal is to make art that helps us realize that we're all part of humanity and we are all deserving of inclusion and equality."
