Field Projects is pleased to present a range of witty, self-mocking, and shockingly timely works by Paul Gagner. Skillfully, Gagner coats the desperation and despair of our current moment in humour, pondering the ridiculous absurdity of our interior lives.

In the booth, these works slip between painting and polychrome sculpture as if Gagner’s interior world has exploded into the living realm with drooping foods, cobwebs, and americana log cabins. A lonely date with a vagina log, a dismembered painter still struggling to put brush to canvas, or that fateful coming out story proclaimed across a tissue box: “Mom, Dad, I’m an Artist!” are just a few examples of the sardonic, outcast sentiments found in Gagner’s paintings. Simultaneously dismantling the perception of the “painter as (macho) genius” and yet masterfully executing these painted worlds with care and attention, Paul Gagner’s work subtly points toward the social toll of individually held internal contradictions and misrecognitions.
