Stay Frosty is part tailgate, part trunk show, part festival, and part site-specific exhibition located in an open-air parking lot in West Harlem. Produced by BravinLee.
Field Projects presents Kate Corroon Skakel’s “Baller (For Ray),” a tailgate devotional to the classic New York City pastime of pick-up basketball. For Skakel, play is a sacred act, a practice of returning to a true human nature we have lost in the fray of solemn modernity. By reimagining familiar objects of sport and leisure, Skakel’s work disrupts our expectations surrounding function and form. Her latest work, “Baller (For Ray),” is a textural and colorful feast for the eyes. Delicate scalloped crochet meets synthetic gold fringe, materials more at home at a used car lot, and together result in an oversized basketball hoop as glorious as it is absurd.
Take communion with the artist as she “cracks open a cold one,” complete with lovingly crocheted beer koozies for the occasion. The work (re: game) is intentionally imprecise and colorful, rejecting our cultural drive towards perfection and favoring the pleasure of intuition and glee instead. Through fiber-based sculpture, Skakel creates physical reminders to preserve a sense of openness and malleability amidst the growing burdens of adult responsibility. “Baller (For Ray)” invites us to loosen our grip, laugh, and find grace in the fumble.
